Licensed Electricians in Merced, CA
Some Merced homes buy their electricity from Merced Irrigation District and others from PG&E, and you notice the difference the moment you upgrade a panel or add a big circuit. Our Merced electricians work from 1170 W Olive Ave, Suite 2. They handle the City of Merced permit, the utility paperwork and the work itself, whether that’s a new 240-volt line, a standby generator hookup or a breaker that won’t stay on.

A recent panel upgrade in the Merced area

This job ran under a Merced County permit, passed its final inspection on September 4, 2026, and we returned five days later to add new dedicated circuits.
MID or PG&E: who powers your Merced home?
Merced Irrigation District sells electricity in eastern Merced County, including parts of the cities of Merced, Atwater and Livingston. Addresses outside MID’s system are on PG&E. Your bill tells you which one you have. If you’re not sure, we’ll check before we quote.
It matters because the paperwork is different:
- MID homes. MID wants to approve the location before a new main switch or panel goes in, and its residential service application covers upgrades to an existing service. MID sets the meter and energizes the service once the final inspection is signed off. For MID account questions, MID’s electric line is 209-722-3041.
- PG&E homes. A panel change goes through PG&E’s Your Projects portal. PG&E assigns a Job Owner, who makes contact within five business days. After the City of Merced inspection passes, PG&E schedules the meter connection.
“Angel and Kevin were able to diagnose what the electrical problem was and set up everything including hooking up a temporary generator for my refrigerator. We had to include getting a permit and getting PG&E to come out, so it took an extra day to get everything done.”

City of Merced permits and inspections
Inside city limits, electrical permits come from the City of Merced’s Inspection Services Division at 678 W 18th Street. Applications, fees and inspection requests all run through the city’s Civic Access portal, and the 2025 California building codes apply to submittals made on or after January 1, 2026. We file the permit, book the inspection and meet the inspector. Outside city limits, in places like Planada, Le Grand and El Nido, we permit through Merced County Building & Safety instead.
Wiring in older Merced homes
About 23% of the homes in the city of Merced were built before 1970, and roughly 1 in 10 before 1950 (U.S. Census Bureau, ACS 2024 1-year estimates, table B25034). Houses that age were wired for lamps and a refrigerator, not central air, an EV and a heat pump water heater. When we work in one, we check grounding at the outlets, which circuits share a breaker, the condition of the panel and main breaker, and how a new run can reach the attic or crawlspace without tearing up plaster.
“We needed a 240 electrical line installed at the house. Jose came over Tuesday and gave us the estimate. He returned on Friday and completed the installation. It is a highly professional installation. He kept us informed about the process, did the work at a fast pace, and was thoughtful/ careful with our century old house.”
Justin K., Google review of our Merced office, Aug 2026
On that job, the new conduit was sized to carry two more circuits later, for a dryer and a heat pump water heater, so the next upgrade won’t mean opening the walls again.
Panels, main breakers and new circuits
A failing main breaker can make everything behind it act up, air conditioner included. Because we’re licensed for HVAC as well as electrical work, one visit can cover both.
“Anthony came and was very efficient! From the moment i called the office, communication was great! Layton has such a clear understanding when scheduling and Anthony took care of our problem right away. my Ac is fixed main breaker was bad! i highly recommend for Ac services and Electrical!”
Carla L., Google review of our Merced office, Aug 2026
When the panel itself is too small, we start with a capacity check and a free estimate. Then we pull the City of Merced permit and handle the MID or PG&E steps above. Full details on sizing and the process: electrical panel upgrades.

EV chargers in Merced garages
We install dedicated 240-volt circuits and hardwired chargers, including Tesla chargers. In older houses, most of the work is finding a clean path from the panel to the garage.
“He executed the installation of my Tesla EV charger with utmost precision, concealing the wires seamlessly. Furthermore, he ensured that I was able to register the device and verify its functionality prior to his departure.”
Tomas F., Google review of our Merced office, May 2026
“Jose and his team did clean, safe, and thorough wiring installation in my older home for a car charger.”

Standby generator hookups
A generator is only useful if it’s wired into the house correctly. Our electricians connect standby generators to the home’s panels under a permit, so the backup power reaches the circuits you care about.
“The day came when I needed a qualified electrician to wire in my new Generac 26KW generator. … I just needed the electric hookup to my panels.”

That job, with electrician Layne and his helper Isaac, took two days.
Repairs and troubleshooting in Merced
Outlet repair and installation
Often the problem isn’t a broken outlet but a missing one: a bathroom with nowhere to plug in a bidet seat, a garage with one receptacle for every tool. We add outlets where you need them, routing through the attic when there’s no easy path, and we repair dead, loose or scorched receptacles and add GFCI protection in wet locations.
“I Had some electrical outlets installed in bathrooms near toilets in preparation to install bidet toilets. One bathroom straight forward the other bathroom had to go through attic and down to bathroom to complete.”
Debra M., Google review of our Merced office, Jun 2026
Light switch and fixture repair
Switches that stopped working, flicker or feel warm, plus new fixtures, porch and exterior lights, and smart fan and light controls. For bigger lighting projects, see lighting upgrades and ceiling fan installation.
“Good job for angel who did my switch and very informative”
Lorenz O., Google review of our Merced office, Aug 2026
Circuit breaker repair
A breaker that trips every afternoon when the AC starts, one that won’t reset, or a main breaker that has failed outright. We test the breaker, the circuit and the load before replacing parts, and we tell you if the panel itself is the real problem.
Wiring repair and whole-house checks
Loose connections, scorched splices and old wiring that no longer suits how the house is used. If you’re buying an older home or just want to know where you stand, we can inspect the wiring throughout the house and the HVAC system on the same visit.
“Anthony and Angel were prompt with our requests and did the inspection of the electrical wirings of the whole house and our HVAC system. they did an excellent job!”
Jin V., Google review of our Merced office, Jul 2026

GOT QUESTIONS?
Merced electrician FAQs
-
It depends on the address. Merced Irrigation District serves customers in parts of the cities of Merced, Atwater and Livingston, and PG&E serves the rest of the area. The utility’s name is on your electric bill. If you’re not sure, we check before we quote, because the steps for a panel or service change are different for each.
-
Panel and service changes, new circuits and rewiring generally need an electrical permit and inspection. Inside city limits we apply through the City of Merced’s Civic Access portal and schedule the inspection with its Inspection Services Division. For unincorporated addresses such as Planada, Le Grand or El Nido, we permit through Merced County Building & Safety.
-
Yes. On MID power, MID approves the panel location and sets the meter once the final inspection is signed off. On PG&E power, the change goes through PG&E’s Your Projects portal, and PG&E schedules the meter connection after the inspection passes. We coordinate either one.
-
